Alsace is situated in the North East of France, bordered on the West by the Vosges and on the East by the Rhine, which separates it from Germany. The Alsace wine road encompasses some of the most beautiful wine country in the world! More than 90% of the wines in Alsace are white, including Riesling and Gewurztraminer. In the century preceding World War I, the Alsace region changed hands four times between Germany and France, ultimately remaining with France. The largest city within the region is Strasbourg, which is a great place to start off on your wine tour. For additional information, you can visit the Regional Tourism office for downloadable maps.
Stretching for almost 100 miles, the Alsace wine route winds north to south, from Strasborg to MulhouseThe Alsatian Wine Trail extends from Strasbourg to Mulhouse with countless cellars to visit and some of the most incredible food in all the world. Stop in at ancient villages, wander among endless gardens and vineyards and talk to friendly and hospitable inn keepers, Wineries, vineyards and restauranteurs who are eager to help you explore the best that the region has to offer.
For those fortunate enough to travel to Alsace in late December, you must spend at least a day or two in Strasbourg. Ever since 1570, each year Strasbourg has hosted its Christmas market, the famous “Christkindelsmärik”, making this the oldest Christmas market in France! The magic really begins in the late afternoon as evening falls. The windows sparkle with their Christmas lights, the facades are brought to life by the decorations and the streets are filled with the delicious aromas of spices and cinnamon. In Place Kléber, the huge Christmas tree erected there from mid-November onwards never fails to delight strollers.
