Maipo Valley Vineyards surround Chile’s capital, Santiago, and stretch eastward to the Andes and westward to the coast to form three distinct sectors. Alto Maipo reaches into the foothills and produces some of Chile’s leading Cabernets. Central Maipo is one of the country’s oldest and most diverse productive regions, and Coastal Maipo—a relative newcomer—benefits from the cool maritime influence that slides over and between the Coastal Mountains.
The location of the Maipo Valley between the higher elevation Andes mountain ranges and the lower coastal mountains allows for plenty of sunshine during the growing months, and when combined with lower night-time temperatures, leads to strong, well-balanced wines.
Some vintners blend juice from grapes taken from across the Maipo Valley, deriving all the benefits of different climate and soil conditions from various parts of the valley. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the major red and white grapes grown in the Maipo Valley.
