Following a great culinary tradition of the Basque Country, Victor Arguinzoniz, head chef and proprietor of Etxebarri, is renowned for his exceptional quality and freshness of ingredients which are further enhanced through cooking over an open fire.
The restaurant in the Marixa Hotel won Spain’s prestigous Plato de Oro de la Gastronomía Española award in 1999 and has been gaining admires ever since. The restaurant offers innovative dishes featuring local produce and combines this with a strong wine list comprised of the best of the Rioja region.
The cuisine is mastered by chef Marisa Sanchez while her husband Felix runs the wine cellar and manages the front of the house. Chef Sanchez won the National Prize for the best chef in Spain in 1987 and Echaurren won best Hotel Restaurant in Spain in 1982.
The Las Duelas restaurant offers a wide assortment of dishes ranging from Riojan cuisine, based on local recipes and products, to the most creative proposals, with a perfect balance between classicism and innovation. Meals are also served in the impressive adjacent cloister of the centuries-old stone monastery, now converted into a hotel.
