Hartenberg is a historic Stellenbosch estate founded way back in 1692, which has been under the present ownership since 1987. There is no better way for consumers to experience Hartenberg’s wines and brand of uncompromising quality than on their farm, so take advantage of the facilities, tours and experiences enabling them to do so.
Our wetland trail was completed recently. Buy a picnic backpack from the tasting room to enjoy en route. Picnic lunch baskets (and wine!) are available to enjoy anywhere on the vast lawns of the estate. Children are welcome on Hartenberg, and a fully-equipped playground is available for public use.

In 1964 the farm was purchased by Stan & Norma Ratcliffe, at the time there was not a single vine on the farm. However, Stan and Norma Ratcliffe soon realized the potential of the terroir and began planting Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Sauvignon vines gave high quality grapes, which were soon in demand from wholesalers and other wineries.
Norma became more and more interested in the making of wine and began to study the subject. Soon a cellar was in place and in 1984 the first Warwick vintage was released (a Cabernet Sauvignon). It seemed Norma had the talent for making great wines and production soon increased. The Trilogy, since 1986, a Bordeaux style blend soon became one of the flagships of the South African Wine Industry.

We welcome visitors throughout the year to come and taste our wines in our famous “Downstairs” cellar. It is one of the few farms where you can sit and relax, while enjoying a wide selection of wines. For those who like their wines aged, we have the “Collectors Corner” where you can browse at your own leisure, or admire our spider web covered windows which has become a legend of its own.

Besides being the global award winner for Cape Town, Vergelegen also won in two national categories. These were art and culture and providing a significant wine tourism experience. It has previously won in two other national categories, architecture and gardens and grounds.
