Since 1843, with unique single-mindedness and sense of purpose, the Krug family has proudly cultivated the markedly individual character of their exceptional champagne. Theirs is a living legend, a certain idea of excellence that has been quietly redefined through six generations without a break. Krug’s founder, Johann-Joseph Krug, was a maverick who turned his back on a comfortable position in an established champagne house to strike out on his own. He had not only the vision, but also the talent, to achieve his ambition of creating a champagne with a taste quite unlike any other.
Classified as an Historic Monument, the famous Ruinart Cellars are a fascinating sight. An impressive staircase plunges down more than 30 meters underground, finishing in a network of galleries that lead to our chalk pits, where our champagne is aged. Built in 1868 by Mrs Pommery to represent the House’s image of modernity and extravagance, this Elizabethan-style chateau set in the very heart of the city of Reims attracts more than 90,000 visitors from all around the world every year. Since 1969, the Soutiran Champagne House’s ambition has been to reveal, through its wines, all the wealth of exceptional vineyards. Thanks to the quality of the selected grapes, and to that of our blendings, we elaborate champagnes, complex wines with a strong personality. The heritage of the family know-how, combined with a love of gastronomy, leads us to look for originality without betraying the characteristics of the vineyards. Like a famous chef who selects his ingredients judiciously and transforms them with talent, we elaborate our champagnes with the same passion, selecting the best vineyards to create unique champagnes such as the Perle Noire vintage or the “de Saignèe” pink champagne.
Seemingly endless sunshine resulted in an unusually early, magnificent harvest (one of the exceptional vintages of the Champagne region). Grape harvesters going to bathe in the Marne in the evening…Behind these bucolic images was hidden a more harsh reality however: vinegrowers worked hard throughout the year harvesting grapes which they only knew at the last minute if they would be able to sell.We are profoundly attached to the quality of our wines, elements of the art of living and elegance. We also believe in keeping things simple, without excessive solemnity.
The master of ceremonies is named Claude Dervin (son of Michel and grandson of Laon) the third generation of this loyal family to rule over these enchanted wine cellars. For those visiting us, after a tour of the cellars, you will be led to the disgorging and labelling site, then to crown this unforgettable experience, you will be invited to a tasting session conducted by none other than the CEO himself, Jean-Claude Fourmon.
The offices, cellars and wine-presses are situated in Epernay. In order to keep pace with development, a large and elegant building was constructed in 1985 and completed in 1987. From the wine-press to the bottle, the “Cuvées” are meticulously tended for many years. The work is carried out in our cellars which are of traditional design. The temperature in the cellars is maintained at a constant level by natural processes and is a vital aid to the patient work of the winemaker.
