Constantia and the Western Cape of South Africa have a close historical association with wine production, with grapes being planted in the valley as early as 1685. Glen Alpine is in the heart of Constantia, and extensive soil and microclimate studies revealed exceptional parcels of terroir here, suitable for the production of fine wines. Our steep North and South facing aspects are often shrouded in cooling coastal mists and encouraged the decision to plant a limited number of grape varieties.
Glen Alpine is dedicated to the production of only two Constantia Glen wines; a Sauvignon Blanc as well as a 5-varietal Bordeaux style blend comprising Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot.
A 120 ton state-of-the-art gravity fed cellar was completed in time for the 2007 harvest. The cellar fits elegantly into the surrounding landscape and accommodates a small private tasting facility that embraces the beauty of the Constantia Valley and nearby False Bay.
Dominique Hebrard former owner/winemaker of Chateau Cheval Blanc has agreed to offer his experience and services on an exclusive basis to Constantia Glen, and is assisting newly appointed winemaker Karl Lambour in the vineyards and in the gravity fed cellar.
The Sauvignon Blanc has shown great promise with a Gold medal at the SA Young Wine show, 4½ stars in the 2006, 2007, 2008 and now 2009 John Platter Wine Guide, a gold medal at the International Wine Challenge, a silver medal at the 2006 Decanter Wine awards, 90 points in Wine Spectator magazine for the 2006 vintage and now 91 points for the 2007 vintage. Resultant strong demand has enabled allocations into selected top end local and international restaurants, and the balance being sold through boutique retailers.
