Kleine Zalze is just 3 km outside Stellenbosch and forms part of the De Zalze Wineland and Golf Estate. It combines outstanding winemaking and hospitality with leisure and pleasure. Kleine Zalze wines are marked by classical structure and complexity matched by a vibrant flavour intensity. Discernibly South African in style, they are refreshing, beautifully balanced and well suited to food.
Continuing the theme of genuine, easy-going and down-to-earth hospitality, Kleine Zalze Lodge offers home-away-from-home accommodation. Designed in the Cape vernacular, the lodge blends seamlessly with the local environment and mirrors the aesthetic set by the neighbouring golfing estate. The spacious, tranquil rooms are comfortable and sophisticated but informally decorated with tasteful simplicity. They also afford visitors total privacy. Each suite is named after a grape cultivar and comes with its own fireplace. All 47 rooms offer exquisite views of the vineyards, mountains and golf course.
Terroir Restaurant
Terroir opened in October 2004, and over the years has become one of the most sought-after gourmet destinations in the Cape winelands, placing Stellenbosch prominently on the culinary map. The restaurant is located on Kleine Zalze, a family owned wine farm that has risen to prominence both in South Africa and internationally thanks in particular to its award-winning chenin blanc and shiraz. The setting, under historic oak trees with views over the De Zalze golf course and surrounding gardens and vineyards, is both refined and relaxed. It’s the perfect environment in which to enjoy a fine meal matched to excellent wines.
The unpretentious ambience and dressed-down décor belie multi award-winning chef Michael Broughton’s rigorously disciplined approach to food. Classic pairings and intense depth of flavour characterize the chalkboard menu of ‘deceptively simple’ dishes influenced by what’s in season and, where possible, the use of locally grown fresh produce. Care and emphasis is placed on matching the food to specific wines produced at Kleine Zalze, in the Stellenbosch region and further afield.
Terroir’s ongoing success has brought with it a string of prestigious awards, including the Eat Out Johnny Walker ‘Restaurant of the Year 2006’, Eat Out ‘Service Excellence Award 2006’, Eat Out ‘Top 10 Restaurant’ 2005 and 2006, Dine (Wine magazine) ‘Top 10 Restaurant’ in 2005, 2006 and 2007, and Best of Wine Capitals of the World South African Wine Tourism Restaurant of the Year 2006.
What better opportunity to sample, savour and enjoy the wines of Kleine Zalze than right here at Terroir? Most of the Kleine Zalze wines may be ordered by the glass or carafe, allowing for relaxed food and wine pairings. Naturally, Kleine Zalze’s award-winning wines, Family Reserve range and some older, rarer vintages are available on the list.
Yet, the wine list is not only a showcase for the wines of Kleine Zalze, but also to a variety of other great wines from South Africa and the rest of the world, that we believe guests will appreciate for their character and rarity in a South African context.. The international labels on our list come from some of the most renowned wine regions in the world, such as Rioja, Alsace and Burgundy.
The Rooms
The stylishly decorated 47 rooms and suites of the lodge are set alongside the first fairway of the championship ‘De Zalze Golf Course’. The clubhouse is just on the other side of the Blauwklippen and within walking distance. The rooms enjoy breathtaking views of the Stellenbosch Mountains and are surrounded by 120 hectares of vineyards. Guests can enjoy a full or continental breakfast overlooking the first green while being shaded by old oaks.
