In 1988 the farm was purchased by David and Marlene McCay. Together they have restored the farm to its former glory, and Constantia Uitsig now boasts award winning wines, three world-renowned restaurants, a private cricket oval, Spa and a 16-roomed luxury hotel. In 2006 fifty percent of the wine estate was bought by a consortium. Just 20 minutes from the heart of the city, Constantia Uitsig is truly Cape Town’s own Vineyard. The breathtaking rural beauty of a valley, where vineyard rows stretch up the mountainside, is unique in today’s overcrowded world.
Constantia Uitsig’s tranquil surroundings, charming service and heartfelt hospitality are enhanced by its splendid location on a working wine estate. The hotel has sixteen garden rooms furnished with elegant simplicity and sweeping views of the gardens – a perfect resting place for the most discerning traveller. The recently opened Spa has been featured in Tatlers’s Guide to the Top Spas in the World 2007.
Constantia Uitsig offers rooms of exceptional grace and comfort, all with views of the hotel’s peaceful landscaped gardens. The cottages are beautifully appointed with their own verandahs. The generous rooms all have en suite bathrooms with marble finishes. There are five different types of suites: six Garden Twin Rooms, five Victorian Rooms, two Manor Suites, two Family Rooms and one Superior Suite.
In addition to the internationally acclaimed La Colombe restaurant within the estate, the Constantia Uitsig Restaurant run by chef Clayton Bell builds on the indelible legacy of chef extraordinaire, Frank Swainston. The menu’s focus remains the robust flavours of Italy with forays into exotic Asia. Clayton believes that consistency is a key factor in the restaurant’s ongoing popularity. “Don’t over-complicate food, and don’t mess with good quality ingredients. I’ve been here for 13 years, and Uitsig is my second family.”
This attitude underscores the elegant yet relaxed, convivial atmosphere that keeps so many people returning for another meal in the original Manor House on the estate. It’s also why first-time visitors feel immediately that they’ve come home. Since its inception in 1992, Constantia Uitsig Restaurant has consistently featured in The Top Ten Restaurants of South Africa.
The Wine Shop at Constantia Uitsig is open 7 days a week from 9AM to 5PM Monday thru Friday and from 10AM to 5PM on weekends and holidays. The shop is situated at the entrance to the Estate and offers tastings of the Constantia Uitsig Wines.
Formal educational wine-tastings are available by request only for groups of up to 30 people in the Private Function room at The River Café. Expert staff are on hand to assist with any queries – be it food and wine pairing or the history of the Estate. Browse for a perfect gift – from premium brandies to our selection of fine olive oils, kikoys from Kenya or wine accessories and books about the Cape’s magnificent Winelands.
