Marqués de Murrieta is a family business in an almost “romantic” sense of the word. This project is a way of life, where it is impossible to cut the ties that bind our wines and our family.
The vines are predominately Tempranillo, with a few other varietals including Mazuelo, Garnacha and Graziano. Many of the vineyards, including the plots that produce the acclaimed super-cuvée Dalmau, lie on the hills behind the winery looking down onto the town of Logroño. Marqués de Murrieta’s Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is the most well-known wine produced in the whole of Rioja.
Bodegas Marqués de Murrieta includes almost 300 hectares of vineyards in the southernmost part of La Rioja Alta, where the temperatures are higher than in neighboring sub-regions of La Rioja. this, along with the fertility of the soil, enables us to obtain a high-quality grapevine. The extension of the Ygay Estate makes Marqués de Murrieta one of the few Spanish wineries in which the wine is made with 100% or our own grapes.
The renovation of the Ygay Castle is at the core of the winery in the middle of the Ygay Estate. It was originally built in the 19th century by the founder of the winery, Luciano Francisco Ramon Murrieta, the first Marques de Murrieta, to function as his cellar for the elaboration and aging of his first Rioja wines. The Ygay Castle, which remains partially underneath the winery, is similar to the Bordeaux chateaux-bodegas of that time which ensures the retention and accuracy of the original shape, identity and architectural beauty.
