The origin of the Remelluri Farm has been lost in the mists of time. A necropolis at the centre of the estate points to the existence of a village as far back as the 10th century. It tells us of count “Erramel” from Álava , the founder of “Erramelluri”, a historic toponym dating from the Late Middle Ages.

Remelluri, located in the far-western part of Rioja Alavesa near the western coast, has been successful in creating a unique style of blending modern technology (stainless steel vats) with the traditional extended period in oak. Remelluri has become, over the years, a Cult Wine, and despite the limited production, the reputation is large.

Currently located in this place, surrounded by our oldest vineyards, an old wine press was carved out of the rock, almost certainly representing one of the oldest traces of the wine industry in La Rioja. In the 14th century, Hieronymite monks settled on these lands, creating a sanctuary farm, which belonged to the Toloño monastery, located on the summit of the mountain of the same name.

The monks left the place in the 15th century and the sanctuary was maintained by hermits who worshipped there until well into the 19th century. The farm and the monastery belonged to the “Real Divisa”, a communal entity made up of all the villages in the area surrounding the Toloño mountains. They managed the agricultural lands of the farm, and with the resulting crop attended to the flocks of pilgrims arriving from afar to pray at the shrine.

 VISIT OUR MUSEUM
An interesting discoid headstone with an inscription from the end of the Bronze Age dominates the museum of the Nuestra Señora de Remelluri Farm. In addition to the history of the estate, there is a display with a description of the Rioja Alavesa area, as well as the history of wine in this region.

It includes old engravings, display cabinets with objects related to the wine industry, land maps, prints of the different grape varieties of the area and the archaeological materials discovered on the property.
