Hartenberg lies in its own self-contained valley with a pure water source flowing through the entire length of the property into a pristine wetland system. This wetland, occupies 65 of the farm’s 170 ha, and has never been cultivated. Neither shall it be. Since their purchase of Hartenberg in 1986, the owners have intensified conservation efforts, especially regarding alien clearing and birdlife proliferation on the farm.

The 2009 harvest started with the first pick on 3 February, a week later than last year.

The quality of the grapes has been superb and this reflects the high quality of vineyard management that has been achieved by Wilhelm Joubert and his team. Merlot is the best for the past decade and there is no evidence of leafiness and greenness that has been an issue in some previous years. Color of the reds is excellent.

To date harvesting of Chardonnay, Pinotage and Sauvignon Blanc has been completed and picking of Riesling and the other reds is in full swing, We are very excited about our new varieties, Cabernet Franc, Mouervèdre and Petit Verdot that are coming into production and will be used as blending components.

Key Wines produced by Cellarmaster Carl Schultz:
Red: Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage
White: Chardonnay, Weisser (Rhine) Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc
