The Capponi family present a glimpse of the family history, a taste of the wines and other products, a sample of our family recipes, a welcome to our agritourism apartments and town properties, a recap of  “What´s new”  in one of the oldest families in Florence. To the south of Florence winding its way to Siena, the famous road, via Chiantigiana, crosses the hills and valleys that produce one of the greatest wines in Italy, Chianti Classico. For wine lovers who know this road, it is no mystery that just before the town of Greve-in-Chianti.

Here is a long cypress-lined drive that leads up to the villa of Calcinaia. Home of the Counts Capponi since its purchase on May 23rd 1524, Calcinaia is the heart of the family with members of each generation giving new life to the fields, woods, vineyards and cellars just as each spring brings new abundance to the soil. The wine is a perfect example of the family´s love for its land. With each vintage, the Capponis share the hopes, worries, pride and care that are part of winemaking. Chianti Classico from Villa Calcinaia is the truest expression of a family´s pride and sense of history.

Acquired by the Capponi family in 1524, Villa Calcinaia has since grown from its four original farmhouses to its present dimension, approximately 215 hectares of land characterised by expanses of vineyard, olive trees and forestland. Located along the via Chiantigiana, the villa sits at the end of a long avenue of cypresses, nestled among the gentle hills of the Greve valley. Calcinaia offers a superb natural setting with all the conveniences of nearby shopping in the town of Greve and the pleasures of fine wine, olive oil and vinegar from the family winery.

Guests to Villa Calcinaia may enjoy the hospitality of various agritourism residences, apartments in the newly restructured, historic farmhouses that mark the landscape. The apartments at San Pierino, featured on Italy´s RAI3 travel program Bell´Italia, have been praised for their renovation that has brought together the most modern conveniences with an historical appreciation for the countryside, its customs and architecture.

From their 30 hectars of vineyards, the Counts Capponi produce wines internationally recognised and enjoyed since the beginning of the 20th century.  However, the products of Villa Calcinaia were already well known since the 16th century, as proven by documents in the family archive. In addition to their wines, the Counts Capponi produce a Grappa distilled from their own Chianti grapes, a very flavourful Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and an aromatic Red Wine Vinegar. All these products are made according to ancien tradition; vinegar, for one, being recorded in the family since 1693.
