In the village, 18th century château (pillars, park) sits the Chateau Guilhem, and they are intricately linked to growing grapes, as per their Coat of Arms: « In vinea mea, turim aedificavi » “I have built my castle in the midst of my wines”. Today the Estate spreads over 25 hectares of sun drenched limestone hillsides on the Malepere Massif. Many different grapes thrive here like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc. Situated on some of the best “guaranteed vintage” soils, the Chateau Guilhem wines are amongst the most prestigious Malepere wines.
Winemakers for over a century. The Guilhem Estate, has been in the same family for six generations. It is situated in the heart of a small village near the old city of Carcasonne, overlooking the Pyrenees Mountains. Built at the end of the XVIII century on what was once a Gallo Roman stronghold, the Estate has forever been surrounded by vineyards. Our cellar is fully equipped with inox tanks, for top quality vinification and oak barrels for maturing. The cellar is situated in the basement of a store and is therefore at the same temperature all year round, which is ideal for maturing purposes.
The Malepère: This is the name given to the North West guaranteed vintage Languedoc Roussillon Vineyards. The « Cotes de Malepere » stretch from the south west of Carcassonne and their particularity is that they bring together the traditional Atlantic/Bordeaux wine rootstocks and the Mediterranean soil. This contrast of flavours and strengths gives fine wines with complex “bouquets” fruity and full-bodied which makes them different from other wines in the Languedoc region.
