Wine grower Maurice Giraud states that his ambition is to make every visitor to Château de Pommard wonder as they go back in time to discover the treasures of thier Château. Since 1726, the history of Bourgogne and that of Château de Pommard have been closely intertwined. For over three centuries, the Château has cultivated the passion and know-how of Bourgogne. Over the years, the reputation of the Château and its wine spread across the world. “People come here to admire our heritage buildings, vineyards and prestigious wines - they go around our estate and fill their cellars with our nectar, so rare and so divine. Times seems to have stood still here, in what is a true place for meditation and contemplation, where you can discover the love winegrowers have for their land. The culture of excellence can be seen everywhere.”

Today, Château de Pommard is the largest private vineyard in Bourgogne. Its 20 hectares of wines in a single plot belonging to the same owner are enclosed by a two-metre high wall. That very fact makes it unique. Its terroir draws its strength from a clay and limestone soil that was formed in the Upper Jurassic age and the microclimate that prevails in the vineyard. Each plot has its own identity, which is why Philippe Charlopin, the master winemaker, makes the wine from them separately. The quintessence of Pommard is expressed by the old vines, which bring out the best of pinot noir. As the grapes turn into Pommard wine, the vine stocks and the terroir exult, to produce the most exciting tastes.

A wooden door opens onto another world. As they enter, visitors bow their heads almost religiously, and voices drop instinctively. You go down a few steps and enter a true sanctuary. Here, the spirit of Château de Pommard has been breathing for three centuries. 400,000 bottles and hundreds of oak casks stand in a line at a constant temperature of 12°C. They improve as the years go by and keep watch over the place. There, at the heart of the captivating arched cellars, the treasure of the Château can be seen. Emotion and contemplation, the feeling of wonder is great. This is the holiest of the holies, the sacred place. Nobody can be indifferent.

As a starter before the tour of the property, the Château de Pommard museum is a tribute paid to the growing of wine and the perpetuation of traditions by those who look after the estate. It offers a rare collection of ancient tools that were used by winegrowers through the ages. Each tool has its history, role and function. Majestic and unique, a 17th-century press connects the Château to the History of winegrowing in Bourgogne.
