The history of the House has been written over the centuries as an adventure of mankind, a testament to the passion of the men and women who have created it. It all began more than six generations ago at Saint-Hilaire, where the Tisseyre-Limouzy families began to cultivate their family vineyard, which soon flourished. In the beginning of the 20th century, Eugénie Limouzy became one of the first women in Languedoc to manage a vineyard, and to strive towards a qualitative method of cultivation. In 1931, Eugénie’s niece Marguerite married fellow vintner Edmond Antech, a brilliant and upright man of exacting method who took the Estate’s destiny in hand and made it widely and commercially known. His sons George and Roger succeeded him and kept the same philosophy of preserving history and melding tradition and modernity to craft exceptional wines.
Three varieties are used in the blending of the wines made by the House of Antech: Mauzac, Chardonnay, and Chenin. Mauzac, also called Blanquette, because of the fine white coating which forms on its leaves in spring is a typical Limousin grape, and gave its name to the Blanquette de Limoux appellation. It brings thickness and softness to the wine and is distinguished by its aromas of green apples and acacias. It is an excellent base for the making of great effervescent wines. Chenin, the second grape, was imported from the Loire region many decades ago and cultivated with great attention. The Chenin grape yields citrus notes and lends freshness and acidity to ensure aging. Finally Chardonnay, the most famous of the three, gives extraordinary results when grown in Limoux. It combines great expression with beautiful vivacity. It brings complexity, finesse and breadth to blends.
Antech is located in a charming little town in Languedoc in the heart of the Cathare region called Limoux, which is an ideal vacation spot for discovering the confluence of delightfully contradictory influences from the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean, and the Atlantic. Here, you’ll discover the Musée Petiet, the Musée du Piano, the Eglise Saint-Martin, medieval archways at the place de la République, and experience the excitement of a rugby match.
If entering Limoux from Carcassonne, turn left at the roundabout, pass under the bridge, turn right at the next roundabout, and then turn left twice.
