Built at the beginning of the 17th century by the Counts of Anglure, the Chateau was a staging post for French monarchs whilst on progress to their eastern dominions. Louis XIV, the Sun King, was astonished by the sparkling fountains you will see in the miniature lakes in the grounds of the Chateau. The unfortunate Louis XVI also stayed here, the country seat of his First Gentleman of the Bedchamber, Claude de Chamilly, during his flight to Varennes in 1791.

Following the French Revolution, Etoges passed into the hands of the wife of Marshal Lannes who played hostess to the Court of the Emperor Napoleon. Today, the family that has owned Etoges for over a century is delighted to continue the Chateau’s tradition of offering a royal welcome to honored guests. The village of Etoges, in past times an important posting-house, lies on the main road from Paris to Strasbourg. The tombs of the Lords of Etoges are to be found in the 12th century church, which was completed together with a fine Renaissance portal in the 15th and 16th centuries. As befits a village of winemakers and vineyards, the famous “Cote des Blancs” is close at hand.

The Chateau is stunning to look at from the outside, the staff is friendly and helpful and the decor is antique and full of charm, although not necessarily equipped with all of your modern amenities. The traditional old country chateau style remains as the conversion to the hotel stayed as true to history as possible. Old paintings, statues and hand-build furniture adorn the halls and walls.  For your comfort, our 28 rooms, in the Château and its Orangery, are equipped with wireless Internet access, a private bathroom (or shower) with hair drier, television and direct line phone. The rooms of the Château will seduce you by their style and comfort, as each is decorated with the furniture from a prior era. As a listed “historic chateau”, please note that there is no elevator or lift.

The hotel restaurant, located in the newer Orangery is a beautifully adorned building that is quite gorgeous, in terms of food, service and setting. The menus are creative and the food is delicious. There is also a lounge that is both extremely comfortable and cozy, with an open wood fireplace and an extensive wine list. The menu consists of several price-fixed dinner as well as ala carte options to go along with their fine selection of local champagnes and wines.

There are plenty of activities to keep you busy with while at Etoges. Why not paddle around the moat in one of our two rowing boats and try your luck with a spot of fishing ?
