Ruca Malén’s dream began in 1998, when Jean Pierre Thibaud left the chairmanship of Bodegas Chandon in Argentina, after 10 years of service. He met Jacques Louis de Montalembert, who had also forged an outstanding career in the winemaking industry in his hometown, Burgundy. Both men soon discovered that they shared the same dream: starting their own winery in Mendoza, a winemaker’s paradise at the foot of the Andes range.

Thus, they joined efforts to work on the Ruca Malén project. The aim was to concentrate on making wines of excellence, based on their knowledge and, above all, their passion for winemaking. Several months later, they produced their first bottling: the 1999 vintage. From its very onset, Ruca Malén has been committed to enological quality, which translates into wines with style, elegance and distinction.

At present, the winery produces the brands Yauquén, Ruca Malén and Kinién.

“A wine sparkled by a legend”.
Legend has it that Mapuche women used to walk with their eyes fixed on the ground for fear of confronting the piercing look of a god, which it was said was young and good-looking. One day, a most defiant woman, left her fears behind and looked at him. A flash of lightning captivated her and she fell madly in love. The god, moved by this young Mapuche woman, took her with him up North, to the peak closest to the sky from where light came, the Aconcagua. At its foot, the sun shone more brightly, the waters were crystal clear and its virgin lands enclosed all the world’s richness.

He had to leave, as it was written. Yet, he offered her a home, Ruca Malén, the “young girl’s house”. And also, an everlasting promise. A spell. A nectar from which she could drink. And she would re-experience all the joy of his look.  You may not believe in legends, but, when tasting Ruca Malén, you will know that, at least, this one tells the truth.
