Founded by Adriano Ramos Pinto in 1880, Casa Ramos Pinto has an illustrious history. The winery was initially used to make wines headed only for South America and Brazil, but due to the extraordinary reputation that developed, it soon became known around Europe. Adriano Ramos was particularly gifted at marketing and started a campaign using his famous Ramos-Pinto posters, which to this day grace wine shops all over the world. Mr. Ramos was an accomplished artist and his paintings on the labels became famous throughout Europe in the late 1800′s and early 1900′s.

Ramos Pinto Port Wines are prepared in the vinification centre of Quinta do Bom Retiro. In the case of LBV and Vintage, the grapes are trodden in the traditional lagar as this age-old technique allows for the juice of the fruit to be extracted more efficiently and less violently. After having concluded the first steps of vinification, the wines are transported to the historical wine cellars at Vila Nova de Gaia, where they undergo a long ageing process. At Casa Ramos Pinto the know-how is kept a secret but we will make an exception for you. Visit the Ramos Pinto Wine Cellars. Of the four estates owned by Ramos Pinto, none have acquired the fame and noteriety as Quinta de Ervamoira, which in 2006 became a National Winner for the preservation and conservation of their Parks & Gardens. The Quinta de Ervamoira is located in the geographical heart of the Archaeological Park of the Côa Valley, on the left bank of the river Côa. With a total area of 200 ha, this Quinta was the first estate in the Douro Region to be planted vertically and by fields. Each field would grow a different variety, thus putting an end to the mixture of varieties in the vineyards.

With the onset of the construction of the Côa dam, the Quinta de Ervamoira ran the risk of disappearing under water. The discovery of the rock etchings in the Vale do Côa gave new hope to those who could not conform themselves to the disappearance of a unique landscape, one which had been enjoyed by men from the Palaeolithic age. When this threat finally ended, the House Ramos Pinto decided to invest in the creation of an on-site museum that can be visited with prior bookings. With the decision taken by UNESCO to give the Vale do Côa etchings the status of World Heritage, the Quinta de Ervamoira was given the privilege of becoming the first wine producing estate to use the title of Heritage of Mankind.
