Situated by the medieval city wall in the heart of the historic center of Porto, Don Tohho is located in buildings which date back to the sixteenth century. The area, which has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, overlooks the Douro River and offers dazzling views and a unique atmostphere. The restaurant has consistently ranked as one of the most spectacular restaurants in Porto, with superb food and an elegant and vibrant environment. The dining room features a sober contemporary decor and has a view of the river and the exquisite nearby D. Luiz I bridge. The Gaia outpost is a glass and metal stand-alone structure right next to the river, making the most of the magnificent views.
The restaurant is highly prized in the city among the business community, politicians and visitors with a yearning for gourmet cuisine. As a true cultural center, we are pleased to offer our rich and varied regional cuisine, the hallmark of our identity, to guests from around the globe. Guests include past presidents, prime ministers and international music and film stars. This restaurant is one of the most beautiful in Oporto. It was first famous for being owned by one of Portugal’s most popular pop singers but is now mostly known for its gastronomic excellence and historical renovation. Specialties include Bordeaux lamprey, Salted Cod, Tripe with smoked sausage and beans, Sea bass baked in salt, grilled octopus, baby goat roasted in a wood-buring oven and traditional Portuguese stew among other items.
Its waterfront location in Ribeira has also made it famous for the great views of the Douro and Dom Luis Bridge, and a second restaurant was opened directly across the river in Cais de Gaia, named “Dom Tonho II,” also offering fantastic views of Oporto, but with a lighter menu. The bar area in the original restaurant has part of the city’s 14th century wall, and there are two dining rooms where you can sample the most traditional of Portuguese dishes with a modern twist or one of over 500 wine labels, including 150 port wines. The wine list is very good, having won the prize for best Port wine offerings in 2005.
