A short distance from Verona, between the soft hills and Valpolicella vineyards, you encounter Villa del Quar, an elegant patrician Venetian dwelling, where time seems to have stopped during the years of a more splendid period of the Napoleonic age. Together the furnishings, decor and colours recall the then triumphant neoclassical style, which combines a taste for comfort, grace and refinement with the nobility and simple beauty of antiquity, fruit of the renewed archaeological interest for some of the greatest civilizations of the past.
The proprietors, who occupy a part of the Villa, are Leopoldo Montresore and Maria Evelina Acampora. They cultivate a great passion for antique furnishings and for Venetian Villas. And they have also discovered a particular pleasure for hospitality. They have obtained important acknowledgments from the international Guides (rewarded for the 10th consecutive year as one of the 10 best hotels in Italy and awarded 3 Gold Keys).
Also acknowledged for their Good Food having taken advantage of important chefs including the current resident chef Bruno Barbieri, under whose cuisine the restaurant has achieved 2 Michelin Stars and has been awarded 3 Forks by the Gambero Rosso Guide 2005. As for wine, Arquade has received the “Award of Excellence” from Wine Spectator magazine.
It recently became part of the elite inner circle of Relais Gourmands of the Relais & Chateaux chain. Located in the grounds of an immense estate where grapes vines are cultivated, the complex is encircled by a large and pleasant garden enriched by palms, pines and fruit trees, which surround a large cloverleaf shaped swimming pool. The agricultural company uses the grapes harvested to produce the Villa del Quar Satyrus Reserve red wine.
Those who come to the Arquade Restaurant to enjoy the cuisine, can spend the night in the Hotel and relax, enjoy the beautiful Veneto landscape, visit Verona and the beautiful towns in the vicinity. The Restaurant also organises many events and from October to December there are many theme evenings. Villa del Quar is closed in January and February. The Arquade restaurant is ranked at the top of the classifications of the most highly accredited Gastronomic Guides. It has been awarded two Michelin stars and three “Gambero Rosso” forks. Arranged in two rooms, the first called Trésor, with a carved wooden ceiling, is the more intimate with 6 round tables. Pale tablecloths in a material particularly pleasing to the touch. The chairs are in the Directoire style; on the walls antique German and Italian prints.
The Veneto is one of the richest regions in Italy for wine production and at Villa del Quar, in the province of Verona, the Montresor family, proprietors of the estate for many generations, produce an excellent wine: The Villa del Quar Satyrus Reserve, in collaboration with the Allegrini wine cellars.
From the 16th century portico of the splendid patrician dwelling, a wrought iron door of the same period leads to the wine cellar taking you towards a journey crowned with unique enchantment and emotions. The interior is fascinating, with a vaulted ceiling and the floor of the terracotta tile typical of the period. The antique central table, of monastic inspiration, is used for the all-important wine tasting evenings. The suffused lighting is provided by wrought iron torch-holders, the design for which was taken from a painting of Titian dated 1576. Female busts surmount the lozenge-shaped wine racks. The cellar’s collection of 550 labels is a source of pride.
The tasting of wines pertaining to the most famous international labels is one of the elements that bring to you the sophisticated personalized character of the theme dinners that take place in the annex of the Arquade restaurant. The Valpolicella is an area rich in vineyards, where the production of quality wine is important, the most famous being Amarone and Recioto. The largest traditional wine cellars of international importance in the area include Quintarelli, Dal Forno, Speri, Allegrini, Masi Agricola S.p.A., F.lli Tedeschi.Other areas with typical production include: The Soave, The Bardolino and The Custoza, which are no less famous. Favoured by a mild climate, Olive trees and many other types of fruit trees prosper, as well as vegetable produce, all of the highest quality. The alpeggi (alpine pastures) on the nearby mountains are dotted with small mountain farmhouses where important cheeses are produced, such as Asiago, Morlacco and Monte Veronese. In the valleys of the Verona district, there are also paddy fields where a particularly good quality of rice called the ‘Vialone nano’ is cultivated.
