The history of Masi is the history of its vineyards around Verona, in the Venetian region. The name derives from “Vaio dei Masi”, the little valley acquired in the late 18th century by the Boscaini family, which retains ownership to this day. The company has grown step by step through successive, and very careful, purchases in the best viticultural areas of the Venetian region. Masi is also involved in the management of the most historic estate in Valpolicella, which has belonged to the noble Serego Alighieri family, descendants of the poet Dante, since 1353.

The winery has grown through successive and very careful acquisitions, which were selected for the quality of their terrain and location as well as for their historical importance, beginning from the classico zones of Valpolicella, Bardolino and Soave. In the last ten years the company developed projects in other prestigious viticultural areas of the Venetian region and more recently in Tuscany, in partnership with Serego Alighieri, and in Argentina. Winegrowing and producing have recently been developed in Tuscany (Poderi del Bello Ovile) and in Trentino, where collaboration has been initiated with the historic winery of the Conti Bossi Fedrigotti of Rovereto.

The “Venetian area” includes three regions in the north-east of Italy, Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, that historically belonged to the “Most Serene Republic of Venice”, which civilization gave a great impulse to viticulture, wine-making and wine & food culture. Masi vineyards in the Venetian area are located only in the historic and most prestigious viticultural zones. In the Veronese area Masi manages 520 hectares, most of them are propriety, some are operated in partnership or on a long term contract basis. In Friuli, at the Veneto eastern border, (280 ha already productive) our technicians tested and verified ideal pedological and climatic conditions in order to produce modern wines of recognizable Venetian style, made with local grapes and vinification methods. The partnership between Masi and the noble family of the counts Bossi Fedrigotti enriched the winery of 40 ha. in the most prestigious areas of the region, including the famous Fojaneghe vineyards. Despite the relatively small total surface of the vineyards, Bossi Fedrigotti estate remains one on the largest wineries of Trentino.

Masi is a specialized producer of premium wines from the Venetian area. This led Hugh Johnson to refer to Masi as “a touchstone for Verona wines”. The winery is specialized in the production of Amarones and Reciotos, using the historic technique of “appassimento” (drying of the grapes), and has gained worldwide reputation, the only one producing seven different types. Five of them are single vineyards (cru) which have been selected by Masi beginning from the fifties. Masi rediscovered and refined the technique of double fermentation using semi-dried grapes, and markets successful wines such as Campofiorin, its special selection Brolo di Campofiorin, Valpolicella dell’Anniversario Serego Alighieri and Passo Doble, produced in Argentina.
