The vineyards of Marchesi di Grésy have an ancient history; those that surround Villa Giulia, the family’s hunting lodge on the Monte Aribaldo date back to Roman times. The di Grésy family also have a history in the region, one that includes viticulture, although it wasn’t until the early 1970′s that the family business underwent the metamorphosis that produced Marchesi di Grésy as we know it today.
Alberto di Grésy was born in Milan on June 1, 1952, where he completed his studies and graduated from the Bocconi University with a Doctorate in Business Administration. Growing up with a passion for the land and the wine, he spent many weekends and most of his summer vacations at Villa Giulia. This 19th century hunting lodge, built by his grandfather, Carlo, is located on the hill called Monte Aribaldo in the heart of the Piedmont region. He supervised the agricultural operations of the family estates and concluded early on that he didn’t want to limit himself to selling the grapes from his vineyards to the finest wine producers in the area as was the tradition in the Langhe. In 1973 Alberto di Grésy began vinifying his own wine: his objective was to produce wine with the best available technology while respecting tradition, and to transfer as much as possible of the character and personality of the terrain vineyard site, and varietal into the bottle.
The Tenute Cisa Asinary dei Marchesi di Grésy, made up of three estates situated in the Langhe and in the Monferrato zones, is recognized for producing the greatest wines in the Piedmont region. The Martinenga estate in the Langhe near Alba grows primarily Nebbiolo grapes for the production of Barbaresco d.o.c.g. as well as Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon. Also, at Martinenga, are newer vineyards of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Nearby in the Commune of Treiso d’Alba is the Monte Aribaldo estate where Dolcetto d’Alba d.o.c. is grown along with Chardonnay and Sauvignon d.o.c.. In Monferrato, in the Commune of Cassine, the La Serra and Monte Colombo estates produce Moscato d’Asti d.o.c.g., Barbera d’Asti and Merlot (Monferrato Rosso) d.o.c..
MARTINENGA- Famous in ancient Roman time when the estate was known as Villa Martis, today Martinenga’s 11 hectars (29.5 acres) vineyards of Nebbiolo for Barbaresco d.o.c.g. are considered to be one of the greatest single vineyards, dedicated to the production of the Barbaresco. With ideal southern exposure and the particular composition of the soil (blue marl) the diligent work of Martinenga’s grape growers produce fruit that is transformed into a Barbaresco of extraordinary class, race and finesse. The favourable microclimate allows Martinenga to grow grapes of high quality even in difficult vintages, thanks to careful selection of grapes. This is the most important guarantee that Martinenga can offer to the consumer. The production of Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Grésy takes place at the central winery located in Martinenga. The winery, recently expanded, is equipped with a “state of the art” plant which provides the means to produce products of the highest quality, with respect to the oenological tradition from grapes grown in the various estates which di Grésy owns.
MONTE ARIBALDO- The estate, only two kilometers from Martinenga, is on the hill of Monte Aribaldo in the commune of Treiso d’Alba. On the summit one can see the Villa Giulia Grésy, the 19th century hunting lodge of the family’s. From the villa’s gardens one has a splendid view of Piedmont framed by the noble peaks of the Alps. The vineyard extends along the hill with a mixed terrain of calcareous and volcanic soil with an average elevation of 360 meters (1200 feet). The variety product at Monte Aribaldo are the Dolcetto d’Alba, the Chardonnay and the Sauvignon d.o.c..

LA SERRA- This property is located in the commune of Cassine (AL) on the road that connects Ricaldone and Alice Bel Colle. The vineyard is planted mainly with Moscato d’Asti d.o.c.g.., and more recently with Barbera d’Asti d.o.c. and Merlot (Monferrato Rosso) d.o.c..The vineyards cover the hill from the ridge to the road that runs down the valley. In the heart of the estate is the farmhouse surrounded by quiet hills and vineyards.
MONTE COLOMBO- The vineyard, that rises on the hill close to La Serra in the Commune of Cassine, is divided between Barbera d’Asti d.o.c. and Merlot (Monferrato Rosso d.o.c.). The microclimate present combined with the clay based soils provide a highly vocated position which is well suited to the production of grapes for important red wines.
