In Ortigia, in an ancient palace surrounded byt eh waters of its natural port and by an impressive canal, is located the residence “L’approdo delle Sirene”, which offers the best hospitality in a charming and refined atmosphere. The hotel’s name means “Siren’s Landing” taken from the mythical stories indicating that the beauty and song of the hotel will drive passing voyagers ashore and lead them to remain forever. The hotel and surrounding city are so beautiful, that the legend may just be true.
The hotel’s interior feels like an extension of this seascape, as the eight bright rooms are decorated in Mediterranean minimalist style. High ceilings and whitewashed walls provide a perfect backdrop for the vibrantly striped bed coverings, which bring a playful, nautical feel to the rooms. The rooms, some of which have a view of the port, are all furnished in essential Mediterranean style; all rooms have a private bathroom, air conditioning, televisions, telephones, minibars and room service. A characteristic feature of the residence is the breakfast whose menu includes home-cooked fresh food served seasonally on the panoramic terrace overlooking the sea and surrounded by jasmine and bougainvillea.
Owners, Flora and Friedi, offer half of their family to their guests in this fabulous nineteenth century palazzo. This is no ordinary hotel or B&B, as both Flora and Friedi make every effort to cater to your needs, whether setting up excursions, tours or leading their own cooking classes to help visitor become better acquainted with the food and wine of Sicily.
The Approdo delle Sirene has their own boat and can accomodate guests wishing to visit the rocky white cliffs along the coast. Private ships wait on the landing in front of the hotel ready to transport guests to the white cliffs of Sicily’s coast or around Ortigia’s historic center, where visitors can view the city’s skyline of palaces and churches just as millennia of settlers have seen it: from the sea. Also offered are canoe, bicycle and scuba gear rentals. Scuba divers can dive following archaeological itineraries where it is possible to see antique amphora and anchors with your hired guide or instructor.
For visitors who would like to prepare some of these Sicilian delicacies themselves, Flora, the owner of L’Approdo delle Sirene and a member of the Italian Academy of Cuisine, offers private cooking demonstrations of specialties like Cassata alla Siciliana (cream tart made from ricotta and marzipan)
and Falso Magro (veal rolled with cheese, eggs, and prosciutto). Locally produced wines, liqueurs, and olive oils, as well as capers, pâté, and pestos of wild arugula and anise are also available for sampling and purchase at the family’s nearby specialty food store.
