Wine tastings are held on the premises in recently restored rooms which used to accommodate a small monastery of monks in the 16th century.
The Fuligni Estate spreads over one hundred fully-cultivated hectares of land in an almost continual strip on the eastern side of Montalcino where, historically, the most authentic production of Brunello emerged. The Fuligni Viscounts, a long-standing Venetian family, moved to England in the 14th century at the head of a troop of mercenaries at the service of Edward III. With the succession of the Absburg- Lorraine to the Grand Duchy, Luigi Fuligni was transferred to Tuscany as general of the new sovereignty and, around 1770, received an extensive concession of land in the Maremma from the Grand Duke, Pietro Leopoldo.
Fuligni’s task was to see to the reclamation of the land as was the wish of the enlightened monarch. Giovanni Maria Fuligni settled in Montalcino at the beginning of 1900 and started to produce wine just as his family had previously done predominantly in the area around Scansano in the Maremma. The cellars are located at Cottimelli (about three kilometers from Montalcino in the direction of Siena) in an original 18th century residence once the home of Medicean Grand Dukes.
In addition to fantastic wines (see below for a sample of selections), owner Roberto Guerrini Fuligni and friends launched an original music festival: “Music and Tuscan Reds”. A group of musicians and winemakers, with a fervent passion for music, began sponsoring these concerts during the concert breaks of the 1999 Salzburg Festival. The first musical encounters, by invitation only, were planned and subsequently took place in the territory of Siena in August 2000 to coincide with the Palio of Siena.
The festival, which originated as a private gathering among friends, was later repeated and amplified with its success in the years that followed. In one group there are the winemakers including: the Earl Andrea Costanti (Brunello di Montalcino), Lorenza de’Medici Stucchi Prinetti (Chianti Classico), Roberto Guerrini Fuligni (Brunello di Montalcino), the Boscu Bianchi Bandinelli family (Chianti Classico) and Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini (Brunello and Chianti). In the other group there are well-known musicians including some members of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin and the String Sextet of the Berlin Philharmonic: Bernard Hartog, Marietta Kratz, Ying Zhang, Rebecca Schneider, Walter Küssner, Matthew Hunter, Ulrich Knörzer, Simone Jandl, Ansgar Schneider, Götz Teutsch, Ulrich Wolff, Jonathan Kelly, Walter Seyfarth, Daniele Damiano, Sevimbike Elibay, Noriko Sugyiama, Francesco Dilaghi, and Cordelia Höfer.
The main concept is to stage musical events during the summer months featuring the works of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Dvorak and others that are performed in Tuscan villas and on the estates owned by the above-mentioned wine producers. Following the performances, the hosts and their guests indulge in Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico. “Music and Tuscan Reds”, which brings together personalities from both the worlds of Italian wine and European and American cultures, has already become a cultural and wine event of the summer that cannot be missed.
The evenings are composed of a combination of different cultures, music, special places and the wines, a traditional expression of the land. It has become customary that the first “Music and Tuscan Reds” night of the series takes place in Montalcino near the Fuligni vineyards and cellar that has been owned by the family for over a century. Following the concert, which takes place around seven o’clock in the evening on the terrace facing the hills of Montalcino, in the vineyards or in the cellar, there is a dinner organized in collaboration with Fuligni’s American importers Empson, accompanied by a tasting of the latest vintage of Fuligni Brunello and other wines; Rosso di Montalcino, Ginestreto and San Jacopo.
Fuligni Wines:
BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO D.O.C.G.
Aged by regulations for four years, of which approximately two and a half are in wood, Fuligni’s regular Brunello di Montalcino also has optimal lasting characteristics but is destined for more immediate drinking. With its elegant combination of fruit and spicy aromas, the Fuligni Brunello is, in any case, the result of carefully selected grapes coming from low yields per hectare and is not produced in years when the quality of the harvested grapes is not suitable to maintain the high standards of the estate.
BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO D.O.C.G. RISERVA
In the biggest years, the Fulignis select a Brunello Reserve which is aged, according to regulations, for five years, three of which are in wood. The grapes primarily come from the oldest vines in the vineyard. The Brunello Reserve produced from these vines certainly presents characteristics of extreme longevity but immediately reveals its important quality and appeal with the potential of an ageing which may occur over many decades according to storage conditions. Fuligni’s Reserve can be found in the cellars of the biggest collectors and represents an excellent investment thanks to its high value on the market and in auctions.
ROSSO DI MONTALCINO D.O.C. GINESTRETO
The Fuligni Rosso di Montalcino bears the name Ginestreto and, for many years, has been well-known on the market as a product of high quality due to an attentive selection of grapes. Aged for about six months in French oak tonneaux, it bears a strong fruity flavor which can complement an endless array of dishes.
S.J. (SAN JACOPO) I.G.T. TOSCANA
The Fulignis have produced this Tuscan I.G.T. “variation on the Sangiovese theme” for a few years now. S.J. originates from a blend of mostly Sangiovese grapes from own vines and of Merlot from the Bandita vineyard. Aged for some months in French oak tonneaux, it affords a slightly soft impact preserving the brilliant quality and freshness of the Sangiovese grape.
GRAPPA DI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
The Grappa has been traditionally distilled in Gioacchino Nannoni’s artisan distillery in Paganico. It is made from Fuligni Brunello marc within 48 hours of racking and distilled in a slow discontinuous
four-column still.
