You can reach the castle from the Juval Carpark either by shuttle bus or along the so-called Waalwege of Stava and Ciardes. In addition to the Museum, the Castle now serves as an inn and a winery.
Enthroned on a prehistoric site at the entrance to the Schnalstal Valley is Castle Juval. This is the summer residence of the extreme alpinist Reinhold Messner - the first person to reach all of the world’s 14 mountain summits above 8000m. At the castle he makes his vision to cherish and protect the mountains and our cultural heritage from accross the world a reality.
Named after Juval, a hamlet belonging to Castelbello, Juval Castle is situated high above the entrance to Val di Senales. In 1983, the 13th century building was bought by the famous extreem mountaineer Reinhold Messner. Reinhold climbed various mountains around the world for more than forty years, including the Kailash in Tibet, the Fujiama in Japan and Ayers Rock in Australia, all considered Sacred within their own countries. Since then the castle has served as a museum, winery, organic farm and traditional inn.
Enjoy seeing a masque collection from five different continents, the world’s largest collection of Tibet objects and a gallery with mountain pictures. Furthermore the “Cave of Enlightenment”, the “House of Gnomes and Trolls” and the expedition cellar with Reinhold Messner’s equipment await you.
Juval, situated between the sunny Valley Venosta and the throat of the Valley Senales, under the glaciers of the Alps Ötztaler, in the town of Castelbello. A visit to Castel Juval is always a very exciting experience. The castle includes, the tavern “Schlosswirt”, a farmstead with animals found throughout the local mountains and a wine shop. The wine shop specializes in the excellent white wines from local vineyards on the surrounding slopes that are typical of the Venosta Valley. The museum, inn and winery are Juval’s attempt to unite the local culture with the exotic, including the local agriculture and tourism options from the region.
