They have also incorporated cutting-edge technology responding to the strict demands of their customers both in Argentina and in the rest of the world.
Luigi Bosca’s winery is located 16 miles from the center of Mendoza City. its Dutch sytle architecture is considered an icon in the region. Elegant and sober, it combines wthe familiar tradition with the most recent technology and equipment. The tours at Luigi Bosca are a mix between the creation of the wine and the most pleasurable scenes of Mendoza’s art. It is made for small groups who want to know the secrets of good wine.
A traditional vineyard next to the winery is the first stop on the tour. After taking in it’s beauty, the route goes on to show the step by step process of wine production. From the milling of the grapes to the maturing process in oak casks, the wine passes through the old barrels of Nancy’s Oak that are part of the colleciton of historical elements in their orginal state.
Also located within the winery is the famous “Wine Via Crucis” signed by the artist Hugo Leytes. It is composed of 14 murals made out of re-enforced concrete, with a polychrome paint that reflects the wine-making labor during the past decade. The visit concludes at the modern visitor center, where all of the wines are exhibited and available for tasting in a comfortable and cozy atmosphere.
In 1890, around the time of the advent of the railroad and electricity, a seven-year-old Leoncio arrived in Argentina and settled in Mendoza, where he was welcomed by his uncle Balbino, already involved in the wine business. In the village of Unzue, located in Valdorba, Navarra, Leoncio Arizu was born to Saturnino Arizu and Juana Uriz. The meaning of the family name would be a sign of the importance oak wood would have in his life, as Arizu means “oak grove”.
The very first vineyards owned by the Arizus were vines of European origin that were incorporated into the winery. Over time, these vines underwent a very slow and lengthy adaptation process to the hard environmental and soil conditions. Many changes and genetic crossings took place, which enhanced their personal and unique character.
The vineyard since 1901was a well-known reference for those traveling the along Argentina’s Wine Route. Don Leoncio Arizu’s love for winemaking was passed on from generation to generation. This family winery manages the well-known trademark of Luigi Bosca wines. The remarkable growth fostered by its positioning in the Argentinian market and its wide expansion into the five continents has turned this winery into a protagonist of the creation of the Denominación de Origen Controlada Luján de Cuyo (Luján de Cuyo Controlled Origin Denomination), and has led it to launch the first DOC labeled malbec in Argentina and Latin America.
In 1991 the original Luigi Bosca Winery was renovated and enlarged and the wine making equipment is upgraded. This initiative was due to the dramatic growth stimulated by the positioning of the brand in the domestic market and its expansion to five continents. Luigi Bosca leads the creation of the Controlled Denomination of Origin. In 2005 Luján de Cuyo became the first official DOC of Argentina and all South America, comparing itself with pride to other Origin Denominations of the world, obtaining international recognition. The Arizus take pride in a tradition that was born more than one hundred years ago; years in which the family worked toward improving their technique and the observation and understanding of nature, thus giving rise to their approach to wine-making. This is also where their commitment to improving vintage after vintage and to better understand those who choose their wines takes root.
Luigi Bosca’s future is challenging and is always thinking ahead. Its present is focused on the combination of daily work with the creation of new ideas. This is Bodega Luigi Bosca, this is how the Arizu family was created and this is how their history begins everyday, because their past is always a prologue to their future.
