Firriato is a fairly new producer in Sicily, but has managed to secure a strong international reputation. Firriato was started in 1985 by Salvatore and Vinzia Di Gaetano in northwestern Sicily near Trapani although there first large scale production took place in 1994 and are now putting out close to 500,000 cases a year. The Di Gaetanos have dedicated themselves to producing wines from Sicily’s native grapes, such as Nero d’Avola, Perricone, Grillo and Catarratto.
Two of their most popular are Harmonium and Chiaramonte. Harmonium is a Nero d’Avola wine and according to Firriato, the wine “was born out of an act of love towards Sicily and her most important native red grape variety. We gather only the most perfect grapes, those that are sun-kissed, and make wine out of them with care and passion. What a result: dark, dense ruby color, marvellous hints of red fruit highlighted by prunes and black cherries. The palate is very concentrated, powerful and warm, with vigorously caressing tannins. It is a work of balance and harmony that has captured us as only a great musical composition could have done. We therefore decided to call it Harmonium.” The Chiaramonte is also a Nero D’ Avola wine, which is fermented and aged in French oak for 6 months before release.
Firriato also produces several white wines, a few blends and more delicious reds.
Casa Vinicola Firriato, which is in the heart of Sicily’s region with the densest concentration of vines in the whole of Italy. The strength of the company is its youth and dedication to fine wine. The family believes that they are blessed with the resources of one of the most suitable territories in the world for wine growing and can therefore meet the challenge to produce great wines. The philosophy of the company is to develop indigenous grape varieties to their maximum potential. Use international varieties that are suited to Sicilian conditions and offer true value for all of their wines.
