Owned by one of several long-time Amador County winemaking families (four generations of Brees), Sutter Ridge produces Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, and Port. Located on a hogsback ridge just above the town of Sutter Creek, the winery also grows Pinotage — the only commercial planting in California.
John Bree, the winemaker, has had a long history of creative distinctive wines and introducing new varieties to the Foothills. His son, John Junior is the vineyard manager. Sutter Ridge Vineyards and Winery has a wide assortment of varieties, comprising of approximately 170 acres. The vineyard is located in the Sutter Foothills of California at an elevation of 2,000 ft. Sutter Ridge Vineyards and Winery believes that the combination of the great micro-climate, soils, and cultural practices make for a high quality grape.
Sutter Ridge Vineyards and Winery produces approximately 2,500 cases annually. All of the wines are Estate wines, except for the Zinfandel. Sutter Ridge Vineyards and Winery strives to produce a high quality yet unpretentious wine. Sutter Ridge Vineyard and Winery produce wines which have garnered many awards from as far away as The Finger Lakes of New York to San Francisco. One hundred and seventy acres are planted to twenty-two different varieties of grapes.
Pinotage is the winery’s flagship wine, a variety from South Africa brought here by John L. The vineyard is believed to be the largest producer of Pinotage in the entire United States. The family also has an Italian varietals program which includes, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Aglianico, and Fresia. The more classical varieties produced are Merlot, Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Zinfandel. All are estate grown.
